"Introducing Buddhism" by Chris Pauling

As limited as they’ve been, the visits I’ve made to Buddhist temples and texts I’ve read about the religion have given me more peace, valuable practices, and perspective than I’ve taken in from any other.

And, like any other faith-based tradition, a few points of deep concern keep me from committing as a true follower, from the current intolerance and violence Buddhists defend and practice against the Muslim minority in Myanmar, to the practical aspects of temple attendance that would take time away from the suprareligions I find and am fulfilled by in the community, practice, and beauty of making art and running.

That said, Introducing Buddhism by Chris Pauling only gave me more to cherish about the religion, and work with and elevate the best aspects of my life that I prioritize and grow in creativity and fitness.

According to Pauling, “Buddhist ethics… are about liberating ourselves from the slavery of unhelpful habits and conditioning, and becoming effective, potent individuals with control over the direction of our own lives. And they are about acting in a way that gives us a sense of wholeness and pride in honestly trying to live up to our vision of what we can become.”

All I’d have to add to this gem is my gratitude, as well as adding it to the select few personal compasses I keep close to seek and develop the best person I can be.
